What to Pack for a Foraging Excursion
Pack for the walk first, then add the equipment for gathering.

Begin with the route
An hour on a familiar trail and a remote day trip need different preparation. Check the forecast, terrain, daylight and access before leaving. Tell a reliable person your route and return time, and let them know when you are back.
Prepare for an unexpected delay
Use AdventureSmart’s essentials as a starting point: navigation, a light, signalling equipment, first aid, sun protection, extra clothing, food and water, emergency shelter, a knife and fire-starting equipment appropriate to conditions and restrictions. Bring the knowledge to use them. Download needed maps in advance and do not assume there will be a phone signal.
Add your foraging kit
Bring a regional field guide, a notebook or phone for records, separate collection containers and the tools suited to your target species. A rigid basket protects delicate mushrooms; small containers keep soft berries from being crushed. Include a bag to carry your own litter home.
Make room for comfort
Footwear with dependable grip, rain protection and an extra warm layer can matter more than a new harvesting tool. Leave some space in your pack, set a turnaround time and keep the return journey in mind when an interesting patch tempts you farther along.
