A Small Kit, Used Well
How to use a knife, snips, brush and basket without carrying more than you need.

Start with the task
A useful foraging kit is built around what you plan to observe or gather. A basket, a small brush and a regional field guide may be enough for a mushroom outing. Snips can be useful for gathering permitted shoots from a correctly identified plant. Buying more tools will not replace knowing the species and the site.
Use a blade with control
Work with stable footing and keep your free hand clear of the cutting path. Cut away from your body, close or sheath the blade before walking, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for locking and cleaning it. Do not reach into a basket around an exposed knife. If the ground or your hands are slippery, pause before cutting.
Keep the forest floor intact
Use a brush to remove loose debris gently. Avoid rakes or digging through the forest floor in search of mushrooms. Keep tools clean between outings and store them dry. A divided basket or separate paper bags help keep delicate finds from being crushed and keep different collections apart.
Practise before the trip
Try opening, closing and carrying your tools at home. The best kit is one you can use confidently while paying attention to the landscape.
