Start with learning, not a list of edible names
Autumn mushroom foraging on Vancouver Island can begin with observing shapes, colours and the places fungi grow. UBC’s introductory mushroom guide is a useful place to begin researching the subject. Arrange experienced help for identification before planning a food collection. This story covers preparation, rather than identifying edible mushrooms.
Check the exact land you will visit
The Province’s mushroom-picking guidance distinguishes provincial Crown land from places where collecting is prohibited or requires permission. Do not assume a forest road, trail or open gate means you can pick. Check the current rules, boundaries and closures for your destination. Provincial and national parks are not ordinary mushroom-picking destinations.
Prepare for the whole walk
Choose a route and turnaround time before searching. Carry outdoor essentials and leave a trip plan with someone reliable. It is easy to slow down while examining the forest floor, so allow time to return at a comfortable pace. Keep the route manageable rather than following every interesting find farther from it.
Make each observation useful
Photograph a mushroom where it grows and record the surface or material beneath it. Keep a note of the date and general habitat. If collecting a specimen is permitted and appropriate, keep it separate and seek knowledgeable examination. Read our mushroom-handling guide for the next steps; uncertain specimens belong outside the food collection.
