Begin with the question you want to answer

A B.C. foraging calendar is most useful when you arrive with a question: what should I learn about in my region this month? Choose an item and an area before drawing conclusions from a highlighted map. Start near home, where you can revisit a route and compare observations through the year.

Read the regional filter carefully

Forageberry includes Vancouver Island, the mainland coast, the Southern Interior and Northern B.C. as broad planning areas. These are not exact picking locations. Ecosystem information gives regional context; a highlighted zone does not mean the species occupies every part of it. Check the item’s notes and linked sources before planning travel.

Notice where the evidence ends

The catalogue identifies entries with seasonal windows and entries whose seasons are not yet verified. Missing information should stay visible. Do not substitute another species’ calendar or treat an All Year listing as a claim that harvesting is possible throughout the year. Plant records, fungi guidance and marine habitats also describe different kinds of evidence.

Turn a calendar into a local record

Keep a notebook of the date, general location, weather and what you actually saw. Record absence as well as presence. Compare later outings with those notes instead of moving directly from a broad calendar to a harvest. The map is a starting point for learning; identification, permission and conditions still need their own checks.
